The DDTC Annual Awards Presentation was held on Friday 12th November 2010 at the Douglas Bay Yacht Club in their brand new function room which proved ideal for our needs and a much more suitable size than the previous room we have used there. The evening was reasonably well attended, although many members unfortunately were unable to attend for a variety of reasons. Nevertheless, there was a great atmosphere all evening, everyone suitably letting their hair down and great fun was had by all.
Steven and Ryan again made a brilliant job of hosting the evening and the presentation of the awards, with humour and entertainment included. The raffle was well supported, the DJ for the evening was great and played some great tracks, and the evening was considered a great success by all who attended.
Many congratulations to all who received awards, all of which are listed below, along with copies of the presentation speeches made by Steven and Ryan, congratulations in particular goes to Sharon Deuchars and her gorgeous border collie, Molly the Collie, who is adored by us all, and was very deservedly announced the Dog of the Year. Sharon and Molly are off to Crufts in March 2011 and the entire Club wish them both every bit of luck and success.

The following are the presentation speeches made by Steven and Ryan :
Starters Agility Award
In the past few months this person has shown a wonderful attitude towards agility in lots of different ways. They have a caring and thoughtful way of handling their dog and always listen to advice and strives to improve, not to mention the fact that they are always willing to help with any tasks. We think that this person has a very promising future in agility and we look forward to watching you both move swiftly up the grades in the near future. The recipient of the starters award is………………. Laura and Digger
Novice Agility Award
The recipient of this award has worked tirelessly and with great determination over the past year, despite set-backs with the health of the dog. Thankfully this potentially seriously condition seems to be under control now and the dog is working with as much enthusiasm as ever and showing great potential for moving up further grades next season. This person is extremely dedicated and on occasions beats themselves up with frustration when things don’t quite go right, but still comes back to overcome the hiccup. There have been numerous successes for this team of handler and dog this year, both on and off the island, moving up two grades, and long may this trend continue, which we are sure it will. We are delighted to announce the recipient of the Novice Award for 2010 is ………………………. Steven Goldsmith and Ruby.
Most Entertaining Agility Award
The saying that ‘dogs are like their owners’ has never been more true than in the case of the recipients of this award. The scope of their antics knows no bounds and although we don’t see them recently as much as we’d like to, they still don’t fail to deliver their comedy duo when they do show up. The best thing of all though is that they also see the funny side of their nutty ways and are sporting enough to laugh along with everyone else. Nevertheless, this team still manage to achieve some brilliant results together and are steadily working up the grades.
We are all very grateful of the entertainment and hilarity that these two provide for the benefit of everyone and it therefore gives us great pleasure to announce the duly elected recipients of the ‘most entertaining’ award to be presented to …………….Kate Kirk and Meave.
Most Improved Agility Award
Despite only starting agility late last year this dog and handler has consistently achieved placings in competition and has also competed at their first open show earlier in the year. This person is always keen to improve their handling and is always grateful for the help they receive. We have watched this handler’s confidence grow and are sure that dog and handler will continue to improve over the coming year. The recipient of the Most Improved Award 2010 is……………Linda and Lass.
Junior Agility Handler Award
When you have youth on your side it can sometimes be a blessing and sometimes a curse as it puts added pressure on you to perform in front of others. The worry of looking silly can be a barrier, however, we learn that being silly is natural for an adult handler and we have to learn to see the funny side! This young person has tried very, very hard to overcome this barrier and we have had some laughter, occasional tears and a lot of ‘sories’! All this being said, it is plain to see the enthusiasm that this handler has and their efforts are paying off. Please keep up the hard work. The recipient of the Junior Handler Award 2010 is…………Beth Vickers.
Adult Agility Handler Award
It’s always difficult to decide who is awarded this trophy and this year is no different. This person works extremely hard to improve their technique and to understand their dog and has been rewarded by moving steadily up the grades. This person works hard, puts in the time to train others and is a dedicated member of the Club. They can also be relied upon to provide general entertainment but beware of his throwing technique and sudden arm movements!! Joking aside, we are sure you will continue to develop your own personal technique and will do very well in the coming year. Without further ado the winner of the Adult Handler Awards 2010 is…………Ryan Forgie.
Helping Hands Trophy
It never fails to amaze us that each year there is always an obvious recipient for this special award. This year the trophy is being awarded to someone who has given up a lot of their own time to help the Club in various ways. It is never any trouble for this person to lend a hand whether it is to move equipment or set up and run our website, this in itself is a mammoth task and a huge asset to the Club. We are fortunate that we have people that are willing to help year after year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ian Sims for all his help over the past year and hope that you will continue to support our club. This award comes with a big Thank you from all at the Douglas Dog Training Club.
Dog of the Year
Well what can I say about this duo, I guess it will have to be stunning, simply stunning! This award is for dog of the year; however, as we all know it takes a partnership to succeed at agility. This partnership has gone from strength to strength and has been an inspiration to us all. The achievements over the past year are just far too many to mention – but there are a couple which are defiantly worth mentioning. This dog achieved grade 6 this year and is now well on her way to Grade 7. As if that is not enough – she is also on her way to Crufts representing the Isle of Man in 2011!
This dog is a credit to her handler who puts her heart and soul into everything she does and we are very lucky to have them both as members of our Club. We would like to wish both good luck for next year – let them have it and be HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!
I am sure that you now know that the winner of the Dog of the Year Award 2010 is………Molly the Collie and Sharon.
