A brief introduction to dog agility.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with agility, there is a simple principle to it. The fastest time with least faults (preferably no faults) will win. There is one dog and one handler who compete over a set course.

There are categories from Grade 1 (Elementary) to Grade 7 (Advanced) with both agility and jumping classes to enter. There are also fun classes put on for some extra fun. Dogs are sized in three categories Small, Medium and Large.

Agility is licensed through the Kennel Club:

http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk

How much?

£12 annual subscription for an adult handler and £9 for junior members (16 and under). If you are already a club member through dog obedience then one subscription covers both. The cost of training is £3 per week for the first dog and £2 per extra dog for training.

Where is it?

Training is held at Ballagarey Farm, St Marks where we have use of a large indoor riding school, an outdoor menage and a field.

When is it?

Every Saturday afternoon at Ballagarey Farm, St Marks
Class 1 (Starters) 12.00hrs – 13.30hrs
Class 2 (Trainers) 13.45hrs – 15.00hrs
Class 3 (Intermediates) 15.15hrs – 16.30hrs

What do I need?

You will need to bring a flat collar and lead, doggie treats, one of your dog’s favourite toys and some poo bags. You may also want to bring a bottle of water and a snack for yourself as agility can be quite tiring and thirsty work.

Some points to mention with regard to the Club:

  • Rough handling, smacking and shouting at your dog will not be tolerated.
  • When a bitch comes on heat you must not bring her to training for three weeks.
  • All dogs must be vaccinated, you must bring your vaccination card to your first training session and all dogs must receive their annual boosters.
  • Bring treats or a toy to help with training (remember human chocolate is poisonous to dogs).
  • Please turn up for your classes on time & please wait outside until the previous class has finished before you enter.
  • Please ensure you always have a supply of “poo bags” with you, and ensure you always clear up after your dog.

PLEASE NOTE:

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT YOUR DOG IS FIT AND HEALTHY ENOUGH TO TRAIN FOR AGILITY. IF IN DOUBT PLEASE GET A CHECK UP FROM YOUR VET BEFORE STARTING.

IF YOUR DOG IS AGED SIX YEARS OR OVER PRIOR TO FIRST COMMENCING TRAINING FOR AGILITY, WE WOULD LIKE IT TO BE CHECKED OVER BY A VET, AND A NOTE FROM THE VET SUPPLIED TO THE CLUB STATING THAT IT IS FIT AND HEALTHY TO TRAIN FOR AGILITY.
