Welcome.
Douglas Dog Training Club was established in 1981 and began with obedience training. In 2006 the Club also embarked on dog agility training.
The Club is registered with the Kennel Club (“KC”), which is the accepted governing body of most activities in which dogs participate in the UK.
Douglas Dog Training Club holds training classes every week in both obedience and agility, with greater details on both disciplines in other parts of this website. Trainers from the UK are also brought over to the Island on a regular basis to increase the knowledge and experience of all handlers. The Club also caters for those whose aspirations are not necessarily competitive, with pet obedience and agility ‘just for fun’ being catered for in both disciplines. The Club operates a ‘zero tolerance’ policy where harsh handling is concerned, all of our training is based on motivational and reward-based methods, and this results in happy dogs who are keen to learn and please their owner.
The Club organises a Companion Dog Show in June each year, this is a very enjoyable day where the proceeds are donated to the Club’s chosen charity for that year, as voted for at the previous AGM. The Show includes breed and fun/novelty classes, obedience at all levels, agility, and a flyball demonstration has been included in recent years, courtesy of a fellow KC registered Club on the Island, in which some of our members participate.
The Club has a Committee which meets on a regular basis to ensure the smooth running of the Club. There are three KC registered Clubs on the Island, and representatives from all three Clubs meet at least once every year to discuss matters of common and mutual interest/benefit to all. There are three inter-Club agility matches held each year, each Club hosting one each, and this ensures a healthy friendly rivalry and competitiveness is maintained amongst all the local Clubs. Obedience competitions/fun days are also hosted by all Clubs during the year.
The whole ethos of Douglas Dog Training Club is one of enjoyment, both for the handler and the dog, whilst maintaining a well organised and structured environment in which both dog and handler can learn and progress. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and the level of support and encouragement offered from all members to each other is there for all to see.
